LADIES and GENTLEMEN,
To celebrate the launch of our sixth issue - Spring 2008 - as well as our previous, uncelebrated issue - Winter 2008 - we are throwing a party that will no doubt be recorded in the sordid annals of Ottawa literary history as one of the boldest and bloodiest.
Ever since rob mclennan departed the snowy fields of Ottawa for the greener pastures of oil-rich Alberta, Nathaniel G. Moore, Toronto's brash antagonist of all that is sacred in CAN-LIT, has claimed to have usurped rob's previously unchallenged and coveted position as Canada's Greatest Living Poet and Blogger. These claims have ruffled more than a few feathers, causing jw curry to officially ban Moore from the Ottawa literary community.
Much of these allegations and claims to rob's title never reached rob's ears at his Alberta Recovery Ranch. The recent success of Moore's CRITICAL CRUSHES has yet to penetrate the indomitable fortress known as rob mclennan's blog. Until now.
Upon returning to Ottawa, rob has found his kingdom in disarray. The much maligned, often vilified Nathaniel G. Moore has vowed to claim rob's title ONCE AND FOR ALL. rob, never one to shy away from contention, has accepted Nathaniel's challenge.
As editors of The Puritan, we have been approached by the agents of these two literary juggernauts, and have been given the heavy, solemn duty of procuring an arena for their much-anticipated bout.
On the evening of June 27th, 2008, at Babylon Nightclub, Nathaniel G. Moore and rob mclennan will be embroiled in a NO-HOLDS BARRED CAREER ENDING DEBATE. The participants will duke it out through three gruelling rounds of Puritanical debate. The winner will lay claim to Ottawa's greatest prize: GREATEST LIVING POET/BLOGGER. The loser will no longer have a career in Canada and can expect to be writing traveling brochures for CONTIKI TOURS.
As well, as a prelude to the potential slaughter, various authors and luminaries who have been published in The Puritan will be participating in a live reading. A growing list of authors include Matthew Firth, Amanda Earl, Steve Zytveld, Kate Heartfield, Darryl Berger, Jeffrey Ross, Christina Decarie, and of course rob mclennan and Nathaniel G. Moore.
This night is not for the squeamish. These two have been fighting their entire lives. Only one will walk away.
Expect a slew of promotional material and endorsements in the coming weeks.
This is also a fundraising event for a not-for-profit literary journal. Please drag your friends and family (although children should leave before the debate).
YOURS MOST SINCERELY,
Spencer Gordon
